Default Mics preamps?

Well obviously I want to start recording, and become an active audio head too. But i'm looking for the right coordination of mic/preamp. As i heard dynamic mics are shit, and with a condenser mic you need a preamp... any suggestions what to buy for someone starting out ?

what budget are you working with? You can get one of those presonus tube mic pre's for about $100 new, or much cheaper if u get one off craigslist or ebay.

condenser mics and a tube preamp are the way to go. Thats what I use and i'm getting pretty great quality (my setup is about midrange on the quality spectrum) but it's pretty good considering.

I would post a link but my post count isn't high enough yet. if you're interested you can pm me though. good luck

My setup:

Rode NT1A Mic
Soundcraft Compact 4 Mixer
M-Audio Audiophile 192 Soundcard

I looked into getting a pre-amp, but settled on a mixer instead.

If you want some good advice then post a thread on this board:

You should get replies from a few people who know what they're talking about.

i have dynamic mics and condenser mics...the dynamic mic's are more for instrument recording...but the pic up on them is so much better...so don't need a preamp with the dynamic...the condenser, yeah i do need one...but i haven't used one yet...i got a tascam dp-02cf mixing board and my AKG 220 is my primary vocal microphone...i get pretty good sound for not using a preamp at the moment

dynamic mics are used in hip hop all the time, especially large diaphragm dynamics such as a Shure SM7 (highly recommended ) and the electrovoice re20. I suggest these over cheaper consders in that they will ultimately sound more aggressive than a cheap chinese condenser mics.

a preamp is required with any type of mic you choose. solid state aggressive pres such as an API 312, or a chandler germanium are great pres for hip hop vocals. An overall clean and reliable pre would be a Grace 101.

feel free to email me with any questions. shaneoconnorrecording@gmail.com

^^^^Shane & Otherwise are dead wrong on their dynamic comments...

i know this shit is old, but, my input is a pre-amp (phantom power) mixer w/ eq to run your condenser mic (quality and sensitivity can not be touched by dynamics) then run your signal trhough a compressor/ noise gate. Compressor/pre-amp combos are shit, peep the behringer Xenyx 802 & Alesis 3630, those are the components I use. I currently use a Nady SCM 800 mic, but it is getting old and I am upgrading to a Groove Tube GT55.

again, i know this shit is old but i take every chance I get to talk equipment
